Shanghai Airport to City Guide

Quick Take

When you land in Shanghai, your real question is not "What are all the transport options?"

Your real question is: What is the least annoying way to get from this airport to my hotel right now?

My default advice:

  • First time in China, tired, late, heavy luggage: take an official taxi, app ride, or hotel transfer.
  • Daytime, light luggage, hotel near metro: use the metro.
  • Curious about the Maglev: try it if the transfer makes sense, but do not assume it is the easiest hotel route.
  • Hongqiao Airport is usually simpler than Pudong because it is closer to central Shanghai.

The biggest mistake is trying to optimize too much after a long flight. Your first job is to reach the hotel cleanly. You can become a Shanghai transit expert tomorrow.

Who This Is For

This is for foreign visitors arriving at Pudong International Airport (PVG) or Hongqiao International Airport (SHA), especially first-time China travelers who do not speak Chinese and want a calm first hour.

My Default Advice

If you land exhausted, choose the direct route.

Yes, the metro is cheaper. Yes, the Maglev is interesting. Yes, a confident traveler can piece together a clever route. But after a long flight, luggage and jet lag change the math.

If this is your first China arrival and your hotel is not directly next to a metro station, an official taxi or app ride is often worth the extra money.

Pudong Airport (PVG)

Pudong is the airport that usually needs more planning. It is farther from central Shanghai.

Metro Line 2

Use this if:

  • it is daytime or early evening
  • you have light luggage
  • your hotel is near a metro station
  • you want the cheapest route
  • you are comfortable navigating after a flight

Avoid this if:

  • you arrive late
  • you have large bags
  • you are traveling with tired children or parents
  • you hate long station walks

Maglev plus metro or taxi

The Maglev is fun once. It is fast from Pudong Airport to Longyang Road, but Longyang Road is not where most visitors are staying.

Use it if:

  • you want the experience
  • your destination works well from Longyang Road
  • you do not mind transferring

Skip it if:

  • your only goal is the simplest hotel transfer
  • luggage makes transfers annoying
  • you are already tired

Official taxi

This is the simplest mental model: follow airport signs to the official taxi queue, show your hotel address in Chinese, and go.

Use it if:

  • you are tired
  • you have luggage
  • you arrive late
  • your hotel is not metro-convenient

Do not follow people inside the terminal offering "taxi" rides. Keep walking to the official queue.

App ride or DiDi

This can be great if your mobile data, payment, and pickup instructions are all working.

Use it if:

  • your phone data works
  • your payment app works
  • you can follow pickup-point instructions
  • you are comfortable if the driver calls

Avoid it as your first choice if:

  • you have no data yet
  • you cannot find the pickup area
  • payment is not set up
  • driver phone calls make you nervous

Hongqiao Airport (SHA)

Hongqiao is usually easier because it is closer to many central districts.

If your hotel is in Jing'an, Xuhui, People's Square, Hongqiao, or the former French Concession area, taxi or metro can both be reasonable.

My simple rule:

  • light luggage and hotel near metro: metro
  • tired, late, or luggage-heavy: taxi or app ride

Avoid This One Thing

If someone approaches you inside the airport saying "taxi, taxi", do not negotiate. Smile, keep walking, and follow signs.

You are not being rude. You are avoiding the wrong ride.

Use:

  • official taxi queue
  • metro
  • Maglev
  • ride-hailing pickup point
  • airport service desk
  • pre-arranged hotel transfer

Prepare Before Landing

Save these as screenshots:

  • hotel name in Chinese
  • full hotel address in Chinese
  • hotel phone number
  • airport-to-hotel route
  • payment backup notes

Useful phrase:

Please take me to this hotel.

Chinese:

请送我去这个酒店。

Where People Get Stuck

The ride-hailing pickup point is not obvious

Airports separate taxis, private cars, and app rides. Follow official signage or ask staff.

The driver calls you in Chinese

Use in-app messaging or a saved Chinese message. If you cannot manage it, cancel and use the official taxi queue.

The English hotel name does not work

Show the Chinese address. English brand names are not enough.

Metro looks easy on the map but tiring in real life

Long corridors, stairs, crowds, and luggage change the experience. Be honest about your energy level.

Backup Plan

If your first plan fails:

  1. Stop trying to solve everything at once.
  2. Go to an airport information desk or official transport area.
  3. Show your hotel address in Chinese.
  4. Use official taxi if apps are not working.
  5. Get to the hotel first; optimize later.

FAQ

Which Shanghai airport is closer to the city?

Hongqiao Airport is closer to many central areas. Pudong is farther east and usually takes longer.

Is the Shanghai Maglev worth it?

Worth it if you want the experience. Not always worth it if your only goal is reaching the hotel easily.

Should I take the metro from Pudong Airport?

Yes if it is daytime, you have light luggage, and your hotel is near a station. Otherwise, taxi or app ride may be easier.

Can taxi drivers speak English?

Do not assume so. Show the destination in Chinese.

Is DiDi easy from the airport?

It can be, but only if mobile data, payment, and pickup instructions are all working.
